Stamina & Sound Guide

Darkest Hours stamina recovery timings, sprint limits, crouch silence, and sound mechanics every entity uses to hunt players.

Stamina System Numbers

Stamina appears as a blue vein-like bar above your health heart. Sprinting drains it completely in roughly 20.3 seconds. Hitting 0% locks sprint and jump for about 3.5 seconds while your character wheezes audibly—dangerous against sound hunters. Full recovery while walking takes ~17.35 seconds from empty; standing still recovers fastest (~10.67 seconds full regen).

Long sprint sessions apply a regen penalty after you stop running that decays quickly—avoid panic sprinting early in trials. Crouching while stationary accelerates regen further. Use the Stamina Calculator to plan burst distances before Round 4.

Sound as a Core Mechanic

Every entity uses sound to locate players, though some depend on it more heavily (Eyeless, Trollge, Fiesty Foxy). Footsteps, item equips, Radar beeps, and exhaustion wheezing all contribute. Crouching nullifies footstep noise compared to walking or sprinting—default to crouch in adjacent halls when Eyeless is active.

After a chase ends, entities enter a brief deaf period where they cannot hear any noise regardless of volume—that is your window to sprint behind cover. Teach squads to call "deaf window" when chases break. Click detection is separate: Alex, Baldi, and Siren respond to mouse clicks, not footsteps—see sound detection entities.

Deaf Mode and Visibility Indicators

Deaf Mode enables visual indicators for hearing accessibility. White vignette intensity reflects how much noise you are making and how long it persisted; red vignette signals proximity or active chase involving line-of-sight rules. Enable in settings if audio cues are unavailable—many entities telegraph attacks visually anyway (Kolossos charge cue post-v0.2).

Visibility indicators complement but do not replace game knowledge. Pair accessibility settings with wiki guides for sight detection threats that care about camera direction, not volume.

Practical Drill Routine

On empty servers or between trials, drill: sprint until 0%, note lockout duration, walk-regen to 100%, repeat. Practice crouch-walking scrap routes on Grocery Store without sprinting once. Add Radar pulses only when green-range safe.

Bring these habits into Escape Trial where stamina mistakes cost extractions. Review controls for Shift/C defaults and entity survival for which killers ignore sound entirely (some GHOSTS members).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I sprint continuously?

About 20.3 seconds before sprint and jump lock at 0% stamina.

Does crouching make me silent?

Crouching removes footstep noise; items and wheezing can still alert entities.

What is the deaf window after chases?

A short period where the entity cannot hear any player noise—safe sprint opportunity.

Does Radar alert entities?

Yes—Radar beeps are audible to entities, especially dangerous at red-range proximity.
